The City of Mission is the latest area in the valley to adopt a non-smoking ordinance. City officials voted unanimously last night to ban smoking in public places. They say the current ordinance is over two decades old and does not regulate all smoking devices. Smokers must be within 20 feet from an entrance to a public building, as well as outdoor facilities. But there are a few exceptions to this new ban.

Martin Garza, Mission City Manager says, “Hotel, motels where the rooms are allowed to be smoked in. Anything that has to do with it being a private facility or a private home, you can continue doing your business as far as smoking.”

The ordinance will go into effect in the next 90 days. Smokers who do not comply will face fines ranging between $500 and $2,000.
