Traffic on Wilson Road in Harlingen may be flowing smoothly now. But last summer, it was underwater.
“The water came all the way to this level and some of it in the back,” Dianira Gonzalez, owner of Nuestra Cocina restaurant, explained.
Gonzalez says it took at least four days for the water to recede leaving its mark on the property.
While Nuestra Concina was lucky, compared to other businesses a new grant program in Harlingen can help those who need to renovate.
“Anybody that is looking at doing some renovations or has done some renovations, whether if it was because of a flood or want to expand in Harlingen and meet our criteria, then they are eligible,” Raudel Garza, CEO of the Harlingen Economic Development Corporation, explained.
Garza says 200 businesses in the city would be eligible to receive as much as $1,500 worth of grant money for improvements and renovations in their business.
“There are about 180 businesses in downtown alone, well over 600 business owners throughout the general downtown area,” Garza added. ” My board has been very willing to look at extending the program if there’s a bigger demand for that.”
Applications must be turned in by May 1 via email or at the Harlingen EDC office. You can access the package on their website.
