New Law Will Help Veterans Get Job in Law Enforcement

Local News

Starting in September, it will be easier for some veterans to get a job in law enforcement, after Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill that will give former military personnel credit towards becoming an officer.

The author of the bill said veteran’s experience with weapons and handling tense situations makes them perfect candidate to become members of law enforcement.

The law allows an officer who has served in the military to receive credit toward meeting any training hours required for intermediate, advanced or master proficiency certificate based on that military service.

The bill, which was passed unanimously by the Texas Senate, will be adopted by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, who will adopt rules necessary to accommodate the new law.

According to the United States Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces since September 2001 decreased to 3.8 percent in 2018, while the jobless rate for all veterans was at 3.5 percent.

The bill was signed by the Governor on May 25 and will be effective on September 1 of this year.
