A familiar face is taking the vacant seat inside the Hidalgo County Courthouse.

Mission based attorney Jaime Tijerina officially takes over the 93rd State District Court. This follows Judge Rudy Delgado’s resignation in April.

Judge Tijerina is returning to the court through the rest of the year. He was appointed by Governor Abbott early last week.

Judge Jaime Tijerina says, “It’s a short stand on the bench, but we’re going to make it a productive one. I know they had several weeks when they didn’t have a visiting judge, so the backlog is probably a little bit more than some of the other courts. We’re going to try to work a little harder, work a little longer to dispose of those cases in a fair and efficient manner.”

Delgado left the bench in February after being arrested and charged with bribery. Right now Tijerina is also running as the Republican candidate for the Place 4 seat on the 13th Court of Appeals.

A position Rudy Delgado was also after.

“This is just the beginning for me, you know. That’s the prize that I’m working on right now.” said Judge Tijerina.

Now a new judge will be elected in November’s general election. That judge will hold office through the rest of Delgado’s term which ends in 2020.

This is the second time Judge Tijerina is appointed to a district court in Hidalgo County. He also served the 92nd District Court after Ricardo Rodriguez retired to run for Hidalgo County District Attorney.
