MCALLEN, Texas – It’s official the Dallas Cowboys have parted ways with former player and longtime Head Coach Jason Garrett and have hired former Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy.
Cowboy fans in the Rio Grande Valley give their thoughts on the coaching change.
Barry Foster, Cowboys fan, “He built Aaron Rogers up when he was just a back up for Brett Favre and I think he can do the same with Dak Prescott. As far as coaching him and most of all, Mike McCarthy has a Superbowl so he brings a lot to the table.”
Issac Izaguirre, Cowboys fan, “It always helps out to bring in a new perspective on like routes plays how to workout so how to improve it was a drastic measure actually.”
During the 2019 preseason some were placing their bets on the Cowboys making a Superbowl appearance. But after Garrett led the team to an impressive 3-0 start they finished 5-8 missing the playoffs and prompting Garrett’s removal.
“Sometimes in some of the games they just got outplayed by better opponents they played better they executed their plays more and yea it’s just on the players.” said Izaguirre
“It was more than fair. Jason Garrett was there. Put yourself in any position anyone else would have gotten fired after two years. That’s what happened to Ron Rivera.” said Foster.
Most fans we spoke with said only time will tell if it was the right move but are optimistic.
“I just prefer to wait and see hopefully things turn out ok.” said Cowboy fan William Hill.
While most Valley fans welcome the end of the Garrett era some said General Manager Jerry Jones needs to take a back seat role during the season.
“He needs to back away. Honestly although they have won Superbowls with Jimmy Johnson he needs to back off and just let the coaches coach.” said Foster.
