McAllen might have the most dining options, but Mission was named one of the best cities in the country to open a new restaurant.
A new report by the consumer finance site NerdWallet finds the City of Mission is the second best city in the country to open up a new restaurant.
Molcas supervisor Henry Borjas said the restaurant in downtown Mission has had so much business, they had to add more space.
“We’ve been open a little over two years and have expanded the restaurant, so it TMs looking good, Borjas said.
Mission Mayor Beto Salinas credits the city’s low property taxes.
“It attracts business when you have low tax rates, Salinas said.
Thirty new restaurants opened in Mission in 2014, and 12 more have opened up so far in 2015.
While the food and customer service need to pull customers in, location can make or break success.
NerdWallet examined 530 cities in the U.S., each with a population of at least 50,000.
By analyzing demand through factors including population growth, income levels, and restaurant sales and assessing the economic conditions like labor and housing costs, NerdWallet found the section of Interstate 2 connecting Mission and McAllen to be prime real estate for the food industry.
It’s why more than half a dozen new restaurants have opened up between Ware and Shary roads in the past year.
“When people travel and come back this way they get to the McAllen area and see all these restaurants, said Mambo waitress Zenaida Jaramill.
“We have the border, all the people come in and shop in the area and we are right off the expressway,” Koko TMs Service Manager Richard Romero said.
The traffic wouldn’t exist without the Anzalduas International bridge, Mayor Salinas said.
“Ever since we opened that bridge the City of Mission has been growing and growing,” Salinas said.
And that growth shows no sign of slowing down.
The Austin suburb of Cedar Park was the only city that ranked higher than Mission for best place to open a restaurant.
