Hidalgo County Sheriff investigators have arrested a mother and charged her with exploitation of a child.
On October 22, Child Protective Services informed the Sheriff’s Department that Juanita Garcia, 46, was fraudulently organizing fundraisers for her 7-year old daughter whom she stated was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Through the investigation, it was discovered that Garcia was approaching people and asking for donations to pay for her daughter’s cancer treatments. The child was medically evaluated and physicians found no known illness.
During questioning, Garcia admitted to investigators that her daughter had never been diagnosed with cancer, and was asking for money donations from individuals.
Garcia was arrested, charged with exploitation of a child, and handed a $10,000 cash bond.
