A McAllen woman who was recently reported missing was found dead in her car in rural Edinburg on Thursday, according to Jena Palacios, a spokeswoman for the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.

At 11:03 a.m. on Thursday, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to an unresponsive woman inside a car near Mountain View Lane in rural Edinburg.

Investigators identified the woman as 46-year-old Norma Varela of McAllen, who was reported missing earlier in the week.

Varela was reportedly last seen leaving her place of work in Alton on Monday, according to her son, Juan Eduardo Gonzalez.

The case is being handled as an equivocal death investigation. Autopsy results are pending.
