Migrants awaiting court dates for asylum, preparing for cold weather

Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The cold is an inconvenience to many of us but this weather could mean life or death for thousands of migrants camped out on the border near Matamoros. With the temperature drastically dropping in the next couple of days. Thousands of migrants and children on the other side of bridge are sleeping on the concrete and under plastic tarps. Making it difficult to stay warm during these cold nights.

As migrants await their court dates for asylum in the U.S., these weather conditions are not making it any easier. Last week, migrants were given the opportunity to relocate to a shelter where they would be given food and medical attention. While there were some that accepted, many did not want to relocate due to fear of falling victim to crimes while they are there.

The next couple of days will be some of coldest we have seen all year and migrants are trying to keep themselves and their children warm. Several groups have been taking blankets to the migrants in Matamoros. Local 23’s Karina Vargas will bring you more of this story tomorrow.
