Weslaco will host a new regional communication center, which may reduce emergency response times in the mid-Valley.
The new Mid-Valley Regional Communications Center in Weslaco will handle 911 calls for San Juan, Donna, Weslaco and Mercedes. Funded by grant money, the communication center will coordinate police, firefighters and other emergency workers.
By bringing all of our communications into one facility, and being able to manage the system, we TMll be able to provide a better service to the citizens, said George Garrett, the director of emergency management and homeland security for Weslaco.
The new communication center will be located at the Weslaco Public Facilities building.
What happens today is if you call in and you have a situation, they have to get off the phone and call the responding agency, Garrett said.
People who pick up the phone at the communications center will quickly notify the proper emergency dispatcher without an extra step.
Centralizing services may also save money, Garrett said.
Work on the four-city communications center is scheduled to finish next year.
