Mercedes to use dome shelter for COVID-19 patients

Local News

MERCEDES, Texas — Due to the growing number of COVID-19 patients in the Rio Grande Valley, the City of Mercedes will use its emergency shelter to house patients seeking medical treatment for the virus.

The shelter, known as “The Dome,” is typically set aside for those seeking shelter during severe weather.

Mercedes Mayor Henry Hinojosa insisted the shelter be used to house COVID-19 patients due to the abundance of people requiring hospitalization.

The City of Mercedes held an emergency meeting on July 10 to discuss whether or not they should use the dome.

The city commission voted 5-0 in favor of the issue and confirmed the information on Saturday.
