The city of Mercedes held a public commission meeting Tuesday in city hall where public service department directors gave presentations on inter-departmental operations, objective, goals and financial status for fiscal year 2019-2020.

According to the city’s Public Works Street budget summary, the 2018-2019 fiscal year adopted budget was $80,000 solely for street maintenance and repairs. Public Works Director Jose Figueroa says 1,422 streets were under maintenance in 2019 the same year of the $106,000 Christmas tree purchase. “That budget is used for materials such as hot mix, cold mix for patching ceiling[s]… and cracked seal. Everything that is related to the streets, it comes from that fund. It’s normally fully utilized,” he explained.

However, he said money from the 2019 Public Works department did not go towards the purchase of the city’s large Christmas tree. “It was put together by the administration. I don’t have the exact fund but it did not tally in public works,” he said public works paid city employees to install the tree and other signage. “As far as the installation of the tree and the decorations for Christmas that’s part of the parks division. They do some installation at the end of the day [because] it’s located at a park.”
