EDINBURG, Texas – McAllen Police say it was just afternoon today that they responded to the South Texas Behavioral Health Center in Edinburg for reports of an officer involved shooting.

Edinburg Police say it was an on-duty McAllen Police Officer involved in that shooting. McAllen Police say they responded to an early morning incident in McAllen involving a 38-year-old suicidal male. That male subject was being transported to the facility for treatment when in the parking lot he struck the officer in the face with his arms; knocking the officer to the ground.

Police then say the officer regained his footing and shot the suspect in the foot. The officer suffered facial injuries.

Ariel Benedict, Edinburg Police Department PIO, “It was involved with one person. At this time that person and the officer involved have been transported to the hospital. There’s no severe or life threatening injuries.”

The McAllen officer has been identified as 19-year veteran Daniel Cruz.

Edinburg Police are the lead investigating agency because the incident happened in city limits. Police also add that they believe that this is an isolated incident and there was no threat to the public.
