McAllen Middle School Student Organizes Picnic for the Homeless

Local News

An 8th grade McAllen student is making a difference for dozens of homeless people this holiday season.

13-year-old Katie Blackwell organized a picnic at Fireman’s Park to help the less fortunate receive free meals and medical services.

Local non-profit organizations like Emily’s Meals helped Katie put the event together to serve at least 80 people. Katie says her parents have always taught her the importance of helping others.

Katie Blackwell, Picnic Organizer, “If I were in their shoes, I would want someone to care for me. They have no one at all to care about them except for us. I wanted to make a difference and try to make them feel special. Because they are.”
