A new designation for one hospital in the Rio Grande Valley means faster treatment for strokes.
South Texas Health System announced that McAllen Medical Center was recognized as a comprehensive stroke center, which means patients can remain in the Valley instead of being taken to another hospital.
“Right now, this is a big deal for Hidalgo County, having a certified DNV comprehensive stroke center because what it means is that patients who are in the upper Valley don’t need to be transferred,” said Dr. Ameer Hassan with McAllen Medical Center. “They get to get that neurovascular care, aneurysm treatment, stroke treatment, right here at McAllen Medical.”
Hassan said that by having the patients remain at the hospital is key for treatment.
