MCALLEN, Texas – Aiming to increase tourism, the city of McAllen creating stronger ties with Mexico City. City officials recently visited Mexico’s capitol by promoting McAllen as a destination for Mexican travelers and to increase awareness on Aeromar Airline’s non-stop flights between the two cities.
Mexican officials say this tie is extremely important for the economy on both sides of the border.
Roy Rodriguez, McAllen City Manager, “Well they’re a large part of our economy a very, very large part. Somewhere around 30 percent of our total revenue in sales tax comes from Mexican nationals. 30 percent is a huge number especially when you consider when we bring in some $60 million a year in sales tax revenue.”
Officials hope to host “Mexico City Day in McAllen” in the future to keep promoting travel.
