A judge sentenced a man to 40 years in prison on Friday for shooting his wife multiple times in 2019.

Jose Luis Garcia, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault of a family member and one count of repeat habitual felony offenders.

Police responded to a home in San Benito in April 2019. At the scene, they found a woman with multiple gunshot wounds being tended to an ambulance.

A post from Cameron County District Attorney Luis V. Saenz says the defendant’s mother said the couple had been arguing that morning, which then escalated to physical violence.

The woman called the police and asked them to respond quietly, said the post from Saenz. The defendant shot the victim five times with a shotgun, including the face, when he found out authorities had been called.

According to authorities, the children were at home at the time.

The woman survived.

San Benito Police and the Texas Rangers Investigated the case.
