Man dies after crashing into canal in Brownsville, fire chief says

Update: The man has been identified as 22-year-old Romario Samaniego.

An autopsy has been ordered, according to JJ Treviño, a spokesman for the Brownsville Police Department.

Brownsville police are investigating the incident as a single-vehicle accident.

Original story: Brownsville Fire Department Fire Chief Carlos Elizondo confirms that a man died Wednesday evening after crashing into a canal in Brownsville.

At about 7 p.m., a SUV crashed into a canal near Boca Chica Boulevard and Medford Avenue, according to Elizondo.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the man dead in the SUV. He has not been identified.

The Brownsville Fire Department Dive Team searched the canal for a possible second victim, but did not find anyone, according to Elizondo. 

The Brownsville Police Department continues to investigate the case.
