Man arrested for making social media threats toward local schools

UPDATE: The man arrested in connection with posting threatening messages on social media toward local schools appeared before a judge Tuesday afternoon. 

Gustavo Garcia, 18, is charged with making a terroristic threat and exhibition of a firearm, both are third-degree felonies. 

CBS 4 learned that Garcia was arrested Monday evening at a home in San Juan and he is not a student of Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District.

A man from San Juan was arrested Monday for posting threatening messages on social media. 

According to the Edinburg school district, the threat targeted Robert Vela High School among other area high schools. 

The 18-year-old suspect, who has not yet been identified, will be arraigned at 3 p.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Courthouse. 

“Students and staff at Vela High School are safe. Extra security has been brought in to patrol the campus.” said the district. 

The school district says it worked with other local law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect.
