Los Fresnos woman shot dead during domestic dispute

Further investigation revealed that 34-year-old wife Erica Sandate and her husband, 28-year-old Joel Alex Sandate, were involved in a domestic dispute. The physical altercation ended in Erica being shot in the chest, according to the news release.

A domestic dispute ended in the death of a Los Fresnos woman Monday night. 

At about 5:50 p.m., police and Emergency Medical Services responded to the 400 block of West 5th Street regarding someone suffering a gunshot wound, according to a news release from the Los Fresnos Police Department. 

Upon arrival, authorities found that 34-year-old wife Erica Sandate had suffered a gunshot wound to her upper torso, according to the news release.

Further investigation revealed that she and her husband, 28-year-old Joel Alex Sandate, were involved in a domestic dispute. The physical altercation ended in Erica being shot in the chest, according to the news release. 

Erica was transported to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. 

Joel is employed as a police officer with the Los Fresnos Consolidated Independent School District, according to the news release. 

Los Fresnos police were assisted by the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety Rangers Division. 

An autopsy has been ordered.

The investigation remains ongoing.
