R Communications in McAllen sponsored the 7th annual Radiothon today, to raise funds for The Vannie E. Cook Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic. News Center 23 was in their studio with volunteers who were taking caller donations.
The clinic is the first state of the art pediatric cancer treatment facility in South Texas.
“The money that we donate should help our own people. That’s why we’re here, to make sure our community prospers,” said Director of Development, Victoria Guerra.
About 6,500 children have been treated at Vannie Cook over the last 12 years.
These annual Radiothons are a way to help the facility raise money to continue helping young cancer patients in the region.
“In order for us to remain true to our mission of never turning a child away for inability to pay, the clinic has to raise a million dollars a year,” continued Guerra.
Before the facility was created families would have to travel to San Antonio or Houston for their treatment.
The Radiothon will broadcast live again tomorrow and listeners who want to donate can call toll-free at 1-844-789-5437.
Residents can also donate online at www.radiothonrgv.com or in person at La Plaza Mall and R Communications in McAllen.
