EDINBURG, Texas (KVEO) — Everyone wants to remember when their child graduates and it was tough for many students having their school year cut short.
However, one local photography studio is making sure the memories stay in focus.
Graduation is a time to remember, but COVID-19 canceled hundreds of ceremonies across the Valley causing school photographers to miss out on capturing the memories.
“It’s a memory they don’t want to miss out on,” said Lory Ramirez, who works at Southern Smiles Photography in Edinburg.
As soon as they could re-open, Southern Smiles Photography did but focusing on the smaller graduates.
“The minute parents heard we were taking kindergarten pictures, our phones started ringing non-stop, they don’t stop and we’re so happy about it,” said Ramirez.
Southern Smiles takes graduation photos for over 100 schools from Cameron County to Starr County.
“On a normal day we would have seven photographers going out to different schools, seven schools a day, Tuesday through Friday,” said Jacky Brambila with Southern Smiles.
However, because of the virus, they’ve had to switch things up a bit.
“We’re only taking certain number of people a day, appointment only because we have to sanitize the robes, gowns. When they come in, we ask the parents to sanitize their hands and the kids, and we’re only allowing one parent per child in at a time and we’re checking their temperature,” said Brambila about the sanitation measures.
But they say the process is well worth it!
“You should see the kids themselves, they are super excited and then they’re like ‘mom mom!” said Ramirez, “We’re even doing some COVID-19 ones, so they can have these memories you know with the cap and gown and the mask and toilet paper,” said Brambila.
Proving no matter how small they are, graduations are always a big deal.
“We can take it later, but some parents think he won’t longer be a kindergartner if we wait and it’s true,” said Brambila.
Southern Smiles Photography staff say they’ll continue disinfecting as long as it takes to make sure every parent gets to keep their special memory of graduation forever.
