HARLINGEN, Texas- Hospitals have a high demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and for now, a local hospital is making the most of what they have.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is one of the many hospitals seeing a surge in the need for personal protective equipment since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Carlos Cardenas, Chairman of the Board at DHR said, “In the very beginning when this all started, we had issues with supply lines we had issues with what we might have in house and what we were going to need.”
According to Dr. Cardenas, DHR has enough surgical masks, gloves, and gowns for their doctors and nurses on the front line. While also creating their own equipment.
“I think we are getting more in now than we were before, so I think we are in a little bit better shape,” Dr. Cardenas said. “We’ve been making our own masks now, manufacturing them ourselves and they are very high-quality masks for use by our personnel.”
Dr. Cardenas said they have enough PPE to last them one to two months, which is not including their reusable equipment. He said they are doing everything they can to not run out.
“What we’re preparing to do is not run out of anything, we’re working hard and that’s why we started early in terms of manufacturing our own, and so we’ve implemented those strategies from day one because we weren’t sure whether we would have any shipments at all.”
While DHR has enough PPE for their medical staff, according to Dr. Cardenas. He adds surgical masks are always needed in their hospitals.
