WESLACO, Texas — COVID-19 canceled prom plans across the nation, but one local father made sure nothing got in the way of his daughter’s special night.
David Padilla’s daughter Kirsten is a senior at Weslaco High School and Saturday would have been her prom night.
“When I heard the announcement from Governor Greg Abbott that school would not be going back, it hit me that my daughter wouldn’t have a prom and a graduation…at least for now,” said Padilla, “I just said, you know what, I’m gonna do something.”
So, he did.
“He called me and told me ‘get ready for prom’ and I was like what do you mean,” said Kirsten Padilla.”But that’s all he would tell me.”
Little did she know, her dad was planning a prom just for her.
“I looked around and ordered posters and letters for a yard sign that said prom night,” said David Padilla. “I went to pick them up, cut my backyard, move some tables around, and I said you know what, I’m gonna have a prom date with my 18-year-old senior.”
The father-daughter duo had a steak dinner, complete with fairy lights and music.
“It was great, the dinner and music we danced all night, it was super fun,” said Kristen.
Dad David even named Kirsten prom queen, presenting her with a crown and sash.
“I just remember my little sister was recording us dance and my dad turned to the camera and said ‘how many dads get to dance with their daughter at prom night?’ I almost broke down in tears and he’s right, I mean how many dads get to dance with their daughter?”
Even though prom was not as Kirsten planned, she says the way it happened was so much better.
“He’s always been my best friend. Thank you Dad,” said Kirsten.
