The continued existence of community health centers is at the mercy of the government’s spending bill.

The current spending bill would fund numerous government health programs, including $7 billion for community health centers.

Brownsville Community Health Center Executive Director Paula Gomez and her staff haven’t slowed down day-to-day operations, but the looming fate of the BCHC and other community health centers in the country does weigh on their minds.

“We’ve been trying to stay positive, giving people appointments, etcetera, as if we were going to get funded, but the reality is we don’t control that at this point,” Gomez said.

If another government shutdown were to occur, Gomez told CBS 4 it would affect 20,000 BCHC patients. She added that BCHC hasn’t received federal funding since Oct. 1.
