MCALLEN, Texas – A local author is looking to join the fight against diabetes with education.
This National Diabetes Month, a local advocate is launching a series of books meant to teach children about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. “The Adventures of Exo and Cy” follow a young boy and his dog as they live life in O.B. City. It’s a book inspired by the dangers of diabetes, after the author’s mother and sister died of the disease, followed by family history of blindness due to diabetes.
David Norec, author, “McAllen got the distinction this year of being the fattest city in the United States this year and it has to stop. We have to change the culture. I know I’m not the only person here in the Valley that deals with this illness, but it can and will be done.”
Norec currently visits schools to promote his book along with an interactive session with kids. According to state health officials, experts are concerned that diabetes is a significant burden on Texas health, with over 1 out of every 10 Texans diagnosed with the disease.
