Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Cameron County authorities gather in Brownsville to commemorate fellow peace officers as part of National Police Week.

Today they honor 42 officers and 5 K-9 units who lost their lives while on duty. This is the second year the event is hosted by the district attorney’s office. Event organizers say they’re proud of the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of law enforcement across the Rio Grande Valley.

Luis V. Saenz, Cameron County District Attorney, “Regardless of the badge they wear, regardless of the color of the uniform, they’re all here for one purpose, one objective and that is to provide a safe community. I’m very proud to say that Cameron County is one of the safest counties in the state of Texas and that just doesn’t happen.

This year’s ceremony was also dedicated to injured Trooper Moises Sanchez. The trooper was shot in the head while responding to a traffic accident. He is now in stable condition and recovering.
