Valley residents came together to raise funds for a family who was killed in a car wreck on Christmas Eve.
The Lasara Independent School District raised more than $10,000 to help cover funeral expenses for the Cantu family.
Sandra Salinas, Lasara Resident said, “It makes us feel good, because we’re family. I mean, we just help one another here.”
Sara Alvarado, Lasara ISD Superintendent said, “In light of this tragedy, everyone pulled together and everyone cares so much about each other here. Everybody wanted to immediately help. We had a lot of people volunteer to help cook the chicken, deliver the plates.”
Alejos Salazar Jr. Lasara High School Principal, “We had anticipated initially 1,000. But after a while, the outpouring support from the community really came through. And before we knew it we had to order extra chicken, make extra potatoes, make sure we had extra rice, extra beans because it crept up from 1,000 to 1,600 very, very quickly. Within a day or two.”
Cynthia Ramos Curriculum & Instruction Director, “It does, it really hits home, where you never really thought it would happen. But things do happen and you have to move forward.”
Superintendent Alvarado, “It makes me happy that you know that everybody cares about each other, loves each other, and supports each other. Especially during a difficult time like this one.”
On Monday, Dairy Queen in Raymondville will be hosting DQ Nights in honor of the Cantus.
From 5pm to 9 pm a portion of every customer’s purchase will go towards assisting the family.
