Local News

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Proud gorilla parents, 11-year-old Margaret and 26-year-old Mbundi, as well as the entire Gladys Porter Zoo staff, are excited about the birth of a baby male Western lowland gorilla. The baby, weighing in 4.8 lbs, was born in the early morning hours on Sunday, May 5th.

Margaret and her baby are doing well and are being closely monitored by zoo staff. They can currently be seen in their indoor quarters, but if they continue to do well, they are expected to be allowed outdoors on Gorilla Island as early as next week.

This is both Margaret and Mbundi’s first baby. Margaret was born at the Gladys Porter Zoo on December 18, 2007 to parents, Martha and Moja. Mbundi came to the Gladys Porter Zoo in 2014 from the Kansas City Zoo and is on breeding loan from the Toronto Zoo. He was born on January 12, 1993 to parents, Kakinga and Tabitha.
