Immigration groups and government working to expand migrant camp

Local News

MCALLEN, Texas – A local immigration advocate group is joining the House Homeland Security Committee in Washington, D.C. Today they talked about the dangers migrants are facing in Matamoros.

The group Angry Tias and Abuelas of the Rio Grande Valley continue advocating for migrants by providing aid to those waiting on the other side of the border as part of the ‘Remain in Mexico’ immigration policy.

The group tells Local 23 News, they are working with the Mexican Government and other organizations to build infrastructure in Matamoros. It would house more than 1,000 people, making it a more stable and permanent refugee camp.

Joyce Hamilton, group member, “There is a bipartisan act in congress that’s being introduced to congress and many people are signing onto that right now, to overturn the Migrant Protection Protocols and stop the remain in Mexico program which is endangering so many people and really stopping asylum.”

Angry Tias and Abuelas was recently awarded the Champions for Change Award in New York City, for their dedication to helping immigrants and transforming our community.
