Husband Accused of Killing Wife In Front of Their Son Arraigned In State District Court

Local News

A San Benito man accused of shooting his wife months back was arraigned this morning in a Cameron County State District Court.

Sheriff investigators say 39-year-old Alvaro Mata Jr. shot his wife in the chest in front of their son in early November 2017. 36-year-old Jessica Cortina was an elementary teacher in Primera.

A grand jury has already indicted Mata on murder charges. He remains behind bars in the Cameron County Jail. His bond is set $10 million.

With an official arraignment Cameron County prosecutors can set a date for his day in court which could be as early as this summer.
