Authorities are investigating after finding human remains Tuesday morning in San Benito.

Details are very limited but authorities said they responded to a tip at the intersection of U.S. Highway 77 and Oscar Williams Road just inside the city limits of San Benito. Commander David Osborne with the Harlingen Police Department said investigators responded to the tip by going out to the location on Monday night. They resumed the search Tuesday morning and found the remains.

Authorities searched a vacant field owned by electrical company AEP and found the human bones in a shallow grave. “We exhumed those remains, sequenced them through our evidence process, and they are now in our custody,” Osborne said.

Harlingen police said on a Facebook post that they are continuing to work with Texas Rangers and San Benito Police Department in their investigation.

“Tomorrow we will be back out here, we do have some cadaver dogs coming in from San Antonio. They are going to help us search the rest of the property,” Osborne said.

Authorities say the vacant field is approximately five acres and there is a high chance of bone fragments and other trace evidence across the property. “It’s very dense with a lot of knee-high grass, there are lots of holes and some trees to go around,” Osborne said.

The identity of the remains has not been released.
