Auto-pedestrian crash leaves 5-year-old dead in Harlingen

A fatal auto-pedestrian crash left a 5-year-old dead Sunday morning.

The crash took place at the intersection of Stuart Place Road and Interstate 2 Westbound Frontage Road. Police received a call just after 9:15 a.m. 

According to Harlingen police, a 20-year-old and 5-year-old female were struck by a vehicle.

The two females were selling newspapers on the street.

Police said according to witnesses the driver stopped to look at the victims, but then returned to his vehicle and drove away.

Officials transported both victims to a local hospital.

The 5-year-old was pronounced dead. The 20-year-old female remains in the hospital, her condition is unknown.

Harlingen police said the vehicle was spotted by Primera police at a residence.

According to police, the adult male suspect was arrested at his residence. His name is being withheld pending magistration.

Police remain in the area.
