Historical building to become museum

Local News

SAN BENITO, Texas – A historical building in San Benito is now under new management.

The San Benito CISD will be leasing the Joe Callandret building to the San Benito Historical Society. The site known as school for black children in the early 1950s will become the Callandret Black History Museum in the next year. Their goal is to highlight Black History in the Rio Grande Valley. Complete with restoration of the original building.

Trianna Brock, Callandret descendant, “Some of the classrooms are going to be like they were in the 1950s and stuff. It’s pretty exciting seeing how it was when I wasn’t born. It’s really nice seeing everything come together.”

Believe it or not, the historical society will be leasing the building for the hefty sum of $1 per year.
