High levels of fecal bacteria are being reported at Boca Chica Beach State Park.
Joe Vega with Cameron County Parks and Recreation said that UTRGV Coastal Studies confirmed that there are high levels of fecal bacteria in Boca Chica Park due to the flooding rain that occurred last week.
Authorities said that they are also testing additional sites around the island as well for possible bacteria as well.
We’re told that the contamination is due to the Rio Grande pushing water into the Gulf of Mexico.
Cameron County officials said that Boca Chica Beach is on red alert right now but it is unclear if the park will be closed today. Currently, the park remains open.
Officials are urging Boca Chica Beachgoers not to get into the water or drink it.
Officials said until the Rio Grande subsides, the contamination in the water will still be present.
