The Hidalgo County Tax Office is encouraging residents to pay their property taxes before the last day of the month if they haven’t done so.
Failure to do so will result in a 9% penalty interests. That penalty increases by 2% for every month that goes by and residents don’t pay.
If residents can’t pay the full amount, they are still encouraged to pay whatever they can, so their interests get reduced. The county tax collector says the more residents pay, the more money the county has for things like education.
Pablo Villarreal, Hidalgo County Tax Assessor-Collector said, “The more that we pay, the better it is for all of us, because that means there is funding for the county, cities, and schools, and when there’s more money available then that means our governing bodies won’t increase the tax rate.”
