Hidalgo County Subdivision Still Underwater, Standing Water Posing Health Risks

Local News

For nearly two months a roadway in a Hidalgo county subdivision remains underwater and residents want a resolution. The standing water is also posing a health risk because of mosquitos.

“The Zika virus is a very serious issue and they are putting the health of the people out here at risk.” Says Patrick Eronini.

Eronini is a resident of the Sendero Trails Subdivision in Precinct 4. He says for nearly two months the roadway leading to his home has been flooded. “We’re asking the precinct to, first of all, drain the water, fix the road and then prevent this from reoccurring.”

Eronini says he and some his neighbors have contacted Precinct 4 with complaints but says they receive no response. “It’s unfair that the neighbors have to put up with flooded roads and there is nothing being done by the county at present to take care of this problem.”

The standing water has created a breeding ground for mosquitos and the roadway is being destroyed. Eronini says tax payers will have to foot the bill to repair. He says enough is enough. “The county had an obligation to make sure the developer had appropriate drainage and they did not. Now it is their responsibility, so they need to take responsibility for their failures.”

Local 23 News did reach out to County Commissioner Precinct 4 Joseph Palacios’s office. They referred us to the drainage district. They said they would respond to us, but as of this afternoon we have received no response.
