Construction has begun on a heavily traveled road in Hidalgo County.
The project is about two miles long along Cesar Chavez with majority of it belonging to the county.
Hidalgo County Pct. 2 Commissioner, Eddie Cantu, said the area has not had improvements for some time and wanted to get ahead with construction before the roadway begins to deteriorate.
According to Pct. 2, potholes and accidents are one of the biggest concerns drivers have along Cesar Chavez Rd.
But aside from improving the condition of the roadway, there are also plans for drainage.
“We’re also improving the drainage for that road by doing roadside ditches,” said Cantu. “So, we just want to be ahead of the game because we know how important Cesar Chavez is to that area.”
The $230,000 project has been broken down into four phases, from Owassa Road to Minnesota, which is happening right now, then from Minnesota to Earling Road. After that, will be from Earling to El Dora Road. and finally the last section is El Dora to Sioux Rd.
Cantu adds that there has been several projects already done on Cesar Chavez Road by both the county and the city of San Juan.
The road is expected to be ready by October.
