HIDALGO COUNTY, Texas — In a video message from home, Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez delivered a message to the residents of the county calling on residents to fill out the 2020 U.S. Census.

“We have a huge responsibility for us to be counted,” said Judge Cortez in the video. “It helps us bring in the resources we are desperately going to need after this COVID-19 crisis ends.”

Cortez noted that the money will be mostly allocated by census numbers.

As of Sunday, 44.5 percent of the United States population completed the census, said Cortez.

Texas is slightly behind the mark with a 39.7 percent response rate.

Hidalgo County has only 27.1 percent with a response rate.

Cortez encouraged all residents to complete the census to help the community.

“Please help us help you,” Cortez urged. “Please be counted.”
