Hidalgo County EMS denied loan from Small Business Administration over ‘discriminatory’ question

Local News

MCALLEN, Texas- A judge sided with a local business who sued the Small Business Administration.

The Hidalgo County Emergency Medical Services said they were wrongfully denied a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Loan through the Small Business Administration.

Omar Romero, Chief Restructuring Officer for Hidalgo County EMS, said a judge ruled in their favor, saying a question on the SBA’s loan application was discriminatory.

That question was about bankruptcy, something Hidalgo County EMS is currently going through and the judge felt the question was improperly worded.

According to Romero, the loans they were denied was worth $2.6 million, which is two times their payroll.

The ruling means Hidalgo County EMS can re-apply for the loan.
