Hidalgo County Detention Center inmate tests positive for COVID-19

EDINBURG, Texas — An inmate at the Hidalgo County Detention Center tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the first inmate to do so at the jail.

According to a release, an adult male was arrested by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday, April 2 on various charges such as assault family violence and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The inmate was tested for COVID-19 while in the detention center after investigators discovered he had been in contact with COVID-19 positive patients.

Test results showed that the inmate is COVID-19 positive, said the release.

Officials transported the inmate to a non-pressure cell where he is housed alone.

The sheriff’s office subsequently tested and quarantined 17 staff members and seven inmates who came in contact with the inmate, said the release.

According to the release, the Hidalgo County Detention Center is taking every precaution necessary to ensure the safety of every inmate and staff member in the facility.
