EDINBURG, Texas (KVEO) — Hidalgo County announced they will be assisting family members of COVID-19 victims with funeral expenses through the Hidalgo County COVID Condolence Program.
The new program will assist eligible individuals with up to $2,000, said a release.
“We understand the heartbreak and hardships our residents are facing as they deal with the untimely death of their loved one,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez in the release. “This program will help alleviate some of the financial burden they are facing.”
The county added the over $2 million for the program were allocated through the CARES Act. The program will be in effect until funds run out.
Bellow is how eligibility will be determined, as stated in the release:
- Must be a resident of Hidalgo County
- Cause of death must be COVID-19 related
- Must be affected by COVID-19 due to loss of income
- Income must be below 300% Federal Poverty Income Limits
- Household composition
- Must have signed quote or contract from the funeral home
- Other worksheet criteria
It also mentioned funeral homes will invoice Hidalgo County directly.
