A Gulf Cartel leader, known as “El Diablo,” was caught in Cameron County last week.

Rene Garcia-Cantu was detained on July 17 after Border Patrol agents found a trail of footsteps leading him near La Paloma.

That’s when, according to officials, agents ran into Garcia.

They say Garcia entered the country illegally through Cameron County.

Authorities added that Garcia admitted to, “knowingly and intentionally transporting illegal narcotics into the United States.”

According to the complaint, Garcia told agents that he was in charge of smuggling 300 kilograms of marijuana three times a week from Carricitos to Los Indios. That yield a profit of over $300,000 a year, according to officials.

Detention hearing for Garcia-Cantu is scheduled for this week.
