Grants help sprout school community gardens

PHARR, Texas – A history lesson at a PSJA ISD school has sprouted into a community garden thanks to two grants from Lowe’s Home Improvement.

Buell Central High School is now the host to the PSJA Community Garden. The garden project was inspired by a lesson of the Homestead Act of 1862.

Stacey Proctor, social studies teacher, “In retrospect we wanted the kids to learn how to garden. How to grow healthy food, health and well-being and also giving them a good education.”

The grants totaling nearly $25,000 were used to construct a solar powered classroom with lab, kitchen and hydroponic garden system including lifted garden beds accessible for all students the garden is open to the district and residents.
