The Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville hosts “A Salute to Our Troops.”

This weekend, zoo staff will have special ceremonies dedicated to veterans. A flag raising ceremony will begin in the front of the zoo starting at 10:00 AM this Saturday, August 19.

The zoo will also have a discounted rate for military members and their families. Discount rates will remain during the entire weekend.

New tent facilities to be built in South Texas to house migrants

McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are planning to build more soft-sided tent facilities in the South Texas cities of Donna and Laredo to house an anticipated influx of migrant youth crossing the Southwest border.

CBP officials on Wednesday afternoon told Border Report that “CBP is moving forward with plans for the mobilization of soft-side facilities (SSF) in Donna, Texas. A lease with the city of Donna was awarded on January 15, 2021 and the notice to proceed was signed on January 19, 2021. Construction of the SSF should be completed in approximately 30 days.”

Trump’s pardon of Bannon angers South Texans opposed to border wall

McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) -- President Donald Trump's last-minute pardon of Steve Bannon has angered many anti-border wall activists in South Texas who blame the political strategist for helping the Trump administration to orchestrate miles of border wall along the Southwest border with Mexico.

Bannon, who was Trump's former chief political operative, was among 140 people granted clemency early Wednesday, just hours before Trump left the White House and Joe Biden was sworn in as the nation's 46th president.
