Star Wars, Spider Man, Avengers are just some of the comic book titles readers can scope out, take home to read and add to a collection.

Free Comic Book Day slated Saturday, May 4, is the biggest event in the comic book industry as comic book shops across the Rio Grande Valley and around the world will give away comic books until limited supplies last.

The event is a salute to the American art form that began in the 1930s and spread around the globe. Comics feature a wide range of stories that capture the readers’ imagination, and send them on an adventure across countries, worlds, and even galaxies.

In addition to passing out free comics on Saturday, comic shops will also host community events such as costume contests, creator signings, drawings by guest artists, raffles and prizes, photos with costumed characters, and other fun community activities throughout the day.

According to a release, every comic shop celebrates FCBD in their own unique way, giving fans a great opportunity to engage with their local comic shop and thriving community of pop culture enthusiasts.

Participating comic book stores around the Valley are:

  • Comics Unlimited, 623 NORTH 77 SUNSHINE STRIP, Harlingen
  • Kaboom Comics & Collectibles, 525 S TEXAS BLVD, Weslaco
