Harlingen, Texas (KVEO)—Former Texas House Representative Sergio Muñoz Sr. dies at 68, according to the Hidalgo County Democratic Party.

Muñoz Sr. was taken to the hospital on Thursday and died after a rough battle with COVID-19.

“All I can say is that we are devastated” said Norma Ramirez, chairwoman of the Hidalgo County Democratic Party. “He worked endlessly and tirelessly, and was one of our main fundraisers and supporters. He will be missed.”

Ramirez says Muñoz Sr. was battling with COVID-19 for 26 days.

“He believed in the party, and was a kind and generous man..we are heartbroken” said Ramirez.

Sergio Muñoz, Jr, his son, was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives District 36 on March 2010.

Muñoz Sr. served as representative for Texas’ 36th district between 1993 and 1997.

Muñoz Sr. also served as the Vice Chair for the Hidalgo County Democratic Party.
