Former La Joya mayor pleads ‘not guilty’ to wire fraud charges, released on bond

Former La Joya Mayor Jose “Fito” Salinas was released on a $75,000 bond after entering a not guilty plea Thursday on two counts of wire fraud charges.

Salinas, 81, was arrested Wednesday and charged relating to a public relations contract and the purchase of real property.

As part of Salinas’ bond, he has several requirements as part of his bond including obtaining no passport or travel papers, travel restricted to the Southern District of Texas, no travel to Mexico, avoid all contact with co-defendants, avoid all contact with potential witnesses/victims, no contact with co-defendant/daughter, refrain from possessing firearms/dangerous weapons, refrain from excessive use of alcohol, refrain from use of possession of narcotic drugs, report any contact with law enforcement.

A final pretrial conference is scheduled for April 3 with jury selection scheduled to begin on April 7.
