South Padre Island will be welcoming a new fishing pier.
Officials began adding test piles for the project on Wednesday.
The pier is expected to be about 1,000 feet from the retaining wall into the Gulf of Mexico.
“The first phase is 200 feet over the beach, and then we will do 3rd and 4th, 2nd, 3rd, 4th over the water. So, it will be exciting,” said Clayton Breasher.
The project will be completed in phases. It aims at bringing more people out to fish.
Officials say the project could take about three years, as they will need to pause construction during the turtle season.
