FedEx is building a distribution center in Mercedes — and is looking for new people to hire.

The new freight facility on Anaquitas Street is looking to hire 125 workers, according to Mercedes Interim City Manager Sergio Zavala.

The city acquired the property through an EDA partnership. Developer Setzer Properties purchased the 34 acres of land without incentives for $850,000.

Zavala says this will cause a ripple effect for the city, meaning an increase all-around for the economy.

“It makes the city vibrant. There’s something that is substantial that is occurring in our city and that typically has a lot of companies notice that,” Zavala said.

Yearly property tax paid on the location, according to Zavala, is about $186,000.

Zavala says the city has already had some input from other companies looking to setup shop in Mercedes, but couldn’t disclose who.

The FedEx distribution center is planned to be completed in August of next year.
